Andaman Diaries

Updated: Aug 16, 2021

Day 2 : Baratang Island. The journey through Jarawa Reserve Forest was exquisite and worth all the bumps and potholes on the way. The rich green tropical rain forest hid the well known and sought for tribe Jarawa. Unfortunately, as no photography was allowed in the reserve forest i couldn’t capture the beauty. The forest had all kinds of trees which I could never see in my entire life. It delighted the little inner devil in me to see the overwhelming yet gentle reclamation of nature only over the road but not on the nature friendly Jarawa tribe.  This was en route Baratang Island to view the Limestone Caves. The route to the caves was through a Mangrove Walkway and thin forest path..

All of it was worth seeing but one sight although pinched me.. A man was teaching Hindi to a Jarawa man. The trainer stood straight in front of the Jarawa man seated on the ground with expression of plight on his face. The Andaman Trunk Road is secretly infamous for intrusion in the secluded life of the Jarawas due to the ‘Human Safaris’ conducted by few private tour operators. There is a threat of mainstreaming of the tribe as it is known to maintain distance from outside world. Its a matter of disdain that fellows of our species are being treated as exhibits of a zoo..
