An age old well..

Updated: Aug 16, 2021

Once upon a time, in the backyard of a big hut, some kids were playing with small pebbles. One of the pebble was flung high and it fell somewhere a bit far from them. One of the kids ran towards the flying pebble to see where it would fall. Stumbling by big rocks, the kid stopped and stooped over the to see the falling pebble.

‘Splash’ it fell in the water. The small ripples that it created soon subsided. Other kids came running to this place. It was an age old well that the kids had discovered. The well had a brick boundary, well covered by thick foliage. The kids ran back soon towards the hut as some elder was calling them in.

Thus, in this way, the well was discovered. The well was full of water and appeared to be quite old. Years passed, and all the kids were grown up now. Everyone had forgotten about the well’s existence.

With passage of years, people began using the well relentlessly. The well began to remain thirsty. The hut owner thus shut the well with a heavy concrete slab. With time, shrubs, herbs and little plants grew besides the well boundary, covering it completely. This was done to deliberately forget the existence of the well completely.

Only mightiest of the guys could make it till the thirsty well, by pushing the thickets and bushes , branches aside. Each guy that visited the well, left behind memories and things to the well to cherish upon. One guy left his handwritten papers while the other left his perfume and warmth of a hug.

They say that water aspires for humans in marathi native. The hut owner kept the well’s mouth shut by the heavy slab all the time. But, nothing’s more powerful than a heavy downpour or a strong surge of winds that blew away the heavy slab, the bushes, branches and exposed the well to the world.

No matter how many times the owner shut the well, when storms flew away the cover, well got exposed and hurt till the floor of the well. Owner only could cover the well, but had to bend in front of the storms…
