This is an sweet anecdote from my school days..
Down the narrow road on summer mornings we would walk down hand in hand quite cheerfully to the school. Her bag used to be heavy as compared to her tender age. Her little hands would snuggle completely in my big palms. There is a huge banyan tree on the turning towards our school which has the cycle stand under its shade. As soon as we would cross the banyan tree, little friends of her would greet us beaming under the soothing morning sunlight.
We would part ways as soon as we would reach school gate as she preferred not to be seen ‘holding my hand’ by her friends. After a long day at school, it used to tire her as children of 6 are not quite used to sitting 6 hours at a stretch.
At the strike of school bell at 1:40 pm, all children would rush out of the school gate feeling relived. There were Hibiscus trees on the either side of the stairs that led to a open space in front the school gate. She would stand by the mutually decided place, by the hibiscus tree. The sun would be at its peak, making it sweaty and sultry. With the sun atop her head, she would stand there in the eager sight of me. Many of my classmates and fellow batch mates would inform her that it would take time for the period to end. She would still stand there waiting in spite of being offered to escort her home.
On my sight, she would jump up in joy with her heavy bag. I would come hastily to her, hold her tender hand in my hand and carry the burden from her sholders in my hand..
Now after 5 years of passing out from school, I still receive her, hold her hand and carry her even heavier school bag. It gives me an immense pleasure of satisfaction of being a loving elder sister to her..
