A lovely reconnection.

Updated: Aug 16, 2021

One relatively less hot afternoon, I was engrossed in studying. Just then as usual, sleep arrived and started pulling the shutters of my eyes. To keep the sleep off me, I pulled in a song on my phone. The coolness in the Air conditioned room made me feel that monsoon was on its way. ‘Monsoon’ or ‘The King of Seasons’ as it is called in Hindi, was my favorite season since childhood. The smell of wet earth always brings a maddening romance and a wave of life with it. Little sprouts cover the soil of my garden and birds and dogs appear happy. This parakeet of monsoon swoons over my heart soon and the wait for its arrival is the most exciting of all.

These thoughts transferred me an year ago at the same time of the year. Monsoon was on its way and I had a companion that summer to enjoy the time waiting. My aunt’s daughter was staying with us for her internship that summer. I’d known her from a distance till now, had only a few faint memories of playing with her as a little kid at my aunt’s place, now only to discover what a fun and lovely she was.

I’d been preparing for an exam that time and she’d been doing her summer internship in father’s company. She’s a maths wizard just like my little sister,so we quite used to solve problems together or simply enjoy the thrill of an forecasted cyclone which was expected to hit the coasts of Gujarat that time.

I’d found this lovely song then; which is dancing on my eardrums soothing all the nerves with melodious memories. Monsoon along with its treasures had arrived and me & my cousin were super excited about it. I almost enjoyed each moment spent with her, listening to her stories from the college, home, about her friends.

I saw a little reflection of myself in her as I saw her enjoying with my friends here and trying to resonate with the routine at our home. I felt so very proud of thus little girl, she’d been living away from her mother for the first time for such a long time. And staying at some relative’s whom you don’t even get to meet for years together is a challenge. But I simply loved the way she became a part of the house so soon and didn’t mind becoming a part of the routine here too.

Never had I ever come to enjoy the stay of anyone at my house so much as of hers. And boy! We did miss her loads when she went back with her parents because her only presence added charm to the house. I’m glad that I got to connect with my cousin and enjoy the sips of a most awaited season being enthralled with her and unleashing the child in me along with her. 😊
